The earliest census we have is from 1841. This gives a partial view of the people who lived in Dandy Row at the time but is not as detailed as later censuses. For instance, one of the useful columns in the later ones tells us where the people were born and we can see how far people travelled to find work in the Darwen area. However, the 1841 count does include occupation and it is obvious that most people were weavers at home or in the new mills, or colliers in the nearby drift mines.
